Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Hunting Island is a 5,000-acre park with 5 miles of undeveloped beach. This secluded tropical paradise, which is located in the heart of South Carolina’s Sea Islands, is home to an array of wildlife such as deer, alligators, snakes, and even a popular nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead turtle.

According to (southcarolinaparks.com) Hunting Island is one of South Carolina’s most popular state parks, attracting more than a million visitors a year. The park offers camping, boating, picnicking, swimming, bird watching, geocaching, biking and hiking.

We’ve been coming to Hunting Island since 2011 and we immediately fell in love. Because of this we decided to make a list of our Top 5 Things to do while visiting the island. But before we get started we wanted to throw a trivia question out there for you all. There have been three films filmed at Hunting Island. Can you name them? The answer will be found in this week’s vlog.

Number 5 – Climb the Lighthouse

The historic lighthouse at Hunting Island was originally built in 1859 and then rebuilt in 1875 after being destroyed during the Civil War. In 1889 the lighthouse was then dismantled and moved to its current destination.

The lighthouse has 167 steps to the tiptop and is open for visitors to visit year round.

Number 4 – Geocaching

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. – Geocaching.com

We’ve hidden a photo of Little Blue inside the Hunting Island State Park Official Geocache. The next time you’re on the island take a photo with our photo and send it to us. That way we can connect with other adventurers.

Number 3 – Take a walk on the beach

Hunting Island is famous for it’s tropical undeveloped beaches. Including the boneyard beach, which stretches nearly a mile long at the north end of the island. The boneyard beach is home to hundreds of trees killed by saltwater and erosion. Hunting Island unfortunately has one of the highest erosion rates on the East Coast.

Number 2 – The Mystery

Our number two ties into our trivia question above, “There have been three films filmed at Hunting Island. Can you name them?” Because of this you must watch this week’s episode to find out!
