Several cold, rainy, and overcast days have ushered in the Winter Solstice for the residences of South Carolina.
The Winter Solstice is an astronomical phenomenon, which occurs December 20th – 23rd. During this period the North Pole is the furthest from the sun, allowing for the shift in darkness in the Northern Hemisphere.
Since ancient times, the Winter Solstice has had an important impact on various cultures and religions worldwide. From its association to being the shortest day and longest night of the year to the rebirth of the sun, which brings in new warmth, light, and energy in celebration of the arrival of winter.
