A Special Q&A Session with Pro-MMA Fighter Alexa Conners

You’re a Pro MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Fighter, what does your average day look like?

Alexa: When I am in a training camp I train 2-3 times a day. I mix it up between strength and conditioning and other martial arts.

What is your prep like before you step back into the cage?

Alexa: I go through a strenuous 6-8 week camp where I train 2-3 times a day and eat super clean to start a diet. I also keep a clear head and make sure I’m also mentally strong and ready to engage in battle.

What is your record? Amateur and pro.

Alexa: As an amateur I was 9-1 as a pro I am currently 2-1.

When did you decide to embark on this journey / what was the turning point in your life when you decided to embark on this journey?

Alexa: I started MMA about 5 years ago. I decided to take a kickboxing class, which then turned into taking mixed martial arts. When I first started training, my father began struggling with mental illness. In order for me to cope I turned to MMA, which inevitably saved my life and got me through a very dark period.

Would you say that the world of MMA is a male dominated industry?

Alexa: Yes absolutely! Males dominate MMA, but I have to say, that we as women are taking a stand and making a name for ourselves in the world of mixed martial arts.

With being a female mixed martial artist do you consider yourself a role model for others?

Alexa: I would like to think I help other females consider starting MMA. I am always about following your dreams and doing what makes you happy.

Who do you train with?

Alexa: I train out of Revolution MMA in Spartanburg, SC.

You’ve been vocal with speaking out on the stigma attached to mental illness. Can you tell us all why this is so near and dear to your heart?

Alexa: I teamed up with Erin Herle who is the founder of Submit the Stigma. This is so close to my heart because my father battled with mental health illness his whole life. He ultimately made the decision to take the life of his fiancé and then later take his own. I never want another person to feel the pain that my family has felt and his finances this past year. I hope raising awareness and talking about mental health will help people overcome the stigma.

How will you continue to bring awareness to mental illness?

Alexa: Every single fight I make sure to tell my story in hopes that it helps at least one person fight against mental health illnesses.

What is next for you?

Alexa: I’m going to continue fighting for INVICTA and hopefully sign with the UFC and go for the gold.

What’s an adventure you’re dying to take?

Alexa: I’m dying to sky dive. I want to feel that adrenaline rush so badly!

Truth or Dare

Alexa: Dare

Where or when are you the happiest?

Alexa: I’m the happiest when I have my family and friends with me. They are my inspiration and motivation to keep fighting.
